MARINE-BASED LEARNING THEME

Being the only school with an "ocean view" it seemed like a natural connection to involve our students in learning and caring about marine life. Students engage in walking field trips to Stephen's Field beach and various other marine-based activities to promote enthusiasm, wonder, and appreciation for the ocean.

At Nathaniel Morton Elementary, this initiative has expanded into a multidisciplinary exploration of the ocean with levels of the school representing zones of the ocean and various sea life creatures being adopted by classrooms.

NMES is making connections with local marine resources to offer presentations in school and visits outside of school. Some partnerships include the New England Aquarium, Plymouth Harbormaster, Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown, National Marine Life Center in Bourne, New Bedford Whaling Museum and Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
