The Plymouth Public Schools participates in the Weekly Fluoride Mouth Rinse Program funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Office of Oral Health. The program will be offered to students in grades 2 and 3 in our elementary schools.

The simple method of applying fluoride has been demonstrated to be safe and effective in reducing tooth decay by 20-40%. Under supervision, participating students will rinse their mouths in school with 10 ml (2 teaspoons) or 0.2 % neutral sodium fluoride solution for one minute each week. The solution is then spit out; it is not swallowed.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the 0.2% sodium fluoride mouth rinse as a safe and effective mean of preventing tooth decay. There are no know adverse effects associated with this procedure. The program will help improve the dental health of your child, although it will not take the place of regular dental check-ups and proper tooth care at home.

Polished Dental LLC: Provides the Following services to students with parent permission in the district:

1. A dental hygiene evaluation: cheek the teeth, mouth, and gums (twice a year)

2. Tooth Cleaning: To remove plaque and other deposits (twice a year)

3. Fluoride Treatment: Painted on the teeth to protect them from cavities (up to three times a year)

4. Sealants: Placed on the chewing surface of the teeth to prevent cavities (when needed)

5. Health Education: teach children how to care for their teeth

6. Referrals to dentist if further evaluation is needed
